A Fiordland Crested Penguin (Eudyptes pachyrhynchus) stands at the entrance to a small cave, Whakapohai Wildlife Refuge, West Coast, South Island, New Zealand
Known as tawaki or pokotiwha in Māori, the Fiordland Crested Penguin is probably the third rarest penguin in the world. Despite efforts being made to conserve it, it is still continuing to decline in its breeding range of the south-west coastal fringe of New Zealand's South Island, plus Stewart Island. It is endemic to New Zealand.
