North Island subspecies of New Zealand Dotterel (Charadrius obscurus aquilonius), Otama Beach, Coromandel Peninsula, Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
Tuturiwhatu in Maori
Was threatened but now recovering
I photographed this bird probing into the sand with its bill numerous times. Surprisingly, as in this image, its third eyelid never came across to protect the eye. Why? Is eyesight involved in the feeding process somehow? Do its eyes focus unusually close?
