Aguas Calientes is a small tourist town lying on the Urubamba River at about 2000 metres altitude in the Peruvian Andes. It developed during the 1920s to service construction of the railway that enables tourist access to Machu Picchu from Cusco: there is no road access to Aguas Calientes. Its name, which means hot waters, refers to its hot springs, which offer a very welcome relief for hikers who have just walked the Inca Trail!
