From the site sign: Thingeyrar derives its name from the legislative assemblies held here during the Commonwealth Period (930-1264). Jon Ogmundarson, Bishop of Holar from 1106-1121, pledged to build a church and farm here if God would relieve a famine. The former churches stood next to the farmhouse as did the monastery. Founded in 1133, it existed until the Reformation in 1550. The present stone church was dedicated in 1877. It contains a 15th Century alabaster altarpiece from Nottingham.
