A Heritage Open Day group walking across the sands from South Walney Island to Piel Island, Cumbria, England
Piel Castle is shown in the background. Also known as Fouldry Castle or the Pile of Fouldray, it was built in the 14th Century by the Abbot of Furness as a defence for Barrow-in-Furness. A huge keep, inner and outer baileys, and a curtain wall with towers are all still standing, though parts of the castle have been lost to erosion by the sea.
