Looking approximately north over the exposed gravels of the Rakaia River to the snow-capped Mount Hutt range beyond, Rakaia Gorge, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand
The Rakaia is one of the largest rivers in Canterbury, arising in the Southern Alps more than 90 miles from the sea. Besides snowmelt and rainfall from the mountain ranges, it is fed by meltwater from the Lyell and Ramsay Glaciers, and this gives it its spectacular milky blue colouration. Taken on October 20 after the snowmelt spate had cleared.
