Tussock shrubland and tussockland cover extensive areas of Tongariro National Park. Dominant species include New Zealand Red Tussock grass (Chionochloa rubra), Inaka (Long-Leaved Dragon Leaf) (Dracophyllum longifolium), D. recurvum (Curved Leaf Glass Tree or Neinie), the sedge Empodisma minus (Lesser Wire Rush), Bogrush (Sedge Tussock) (Schoenus pauciflorus), heather and the grasses Festuca novaezelandiae and Poa colensoi.
