The Laki eruption (Skaftareldar) began on June 8, 1783 and continued until February 7, 1784. By that time about 15 cubic metres of lava and tephra had emerged from several fissures, covering about 600 square kilometres - one of the biggest lava flows in the world in the last 2000 years.
