Nazca Boobies lay two eggs several days apart. The first chick pushes the hatchling from the second egg out of the nest, and it inevitably dies. The second egg is laid purely as an insurance policy against a failure to hatch of the first or early death of the first hatchling. The nest is little more than a thin layer of small stones.
