Striated Caracaras (known as Johnny Rooks in the Falklands) have long been persecuted because they kill young lambs, and are classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. They are now protected by law and on some islands have become very approachable. The white leg band means that this bird was hatched on Carcass Island. Leg banding is part of ongoing research into the natural history of Striated Caracaras.
