Two colossi of Ramesses II on the facade of the Sun Temple of Abu Simbel, Egypt; the right hand colossus was damaged by an earthquake in 27BC.
The Sun Temple of Abu Simbel and the Temple of Hathor were threatened by the rising waters of Lake Nasser following the construction of Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. Under the direction of UNESCO they were sawn up and dismantled block by block and reassembled at a new site just 210 metres away from the original location, but 60 metres higher.
