The Temple of Hathor, Abu Simbel, Egypt, built by Ramesses II in honour of Queen Nefertari, his favourite wife
The Sun Temple of Abu Simbel and the Temple of Hathor were threatened by the rising waters of Lake Nasser following the construction of Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. Under the direction of UNESCO they were sawn up and dismantled block by block and reassembled at a new site just 210 metres away from the original location, but 60 metres higher.
