Wana and Wani are the Maori names. Black Swans were native in New Zealand prior to the European settlements, though possibly either extinct or in very small numbers, and were subsequently reintroduced from Australia in 1864. Scofield and Stephenson consider them to best to be regarded as a reintroduced native species. Abundant throughout NZ in suitable habitats.
