North Island Weka (Gallirallus australis greyi) forages for food on shingle, Kapiti Island, North Island, New Zealand
Wekas are flightless rails, endemic to New Zealand. Unlike their timid counterparts elsewhere, wekas tend to show no fear while trying to raid tourists' bags for anything edible. Four geographically-determined subspecies occur.
