Auchindoun Castle is sited on an Iron Age hill fort and was probably built in the late 1470s by Thomas Cochrane, a master mason (equivalent to a modern architect) of James III of Scotland. It was sold to Sir Adam Gordon in 1567 and he was responsible for burning to death Margaret Campbell and 23 more of her family and servants at Corgarff castle in a clan feud in November 1571. Auchindoun Castle has lain derelict since 1724.
