Iona Abbey was founded by St Columba in AD 563, though the buildings visible today date from the early 1200s when a community of Benedictine monks was established on the same site. Oran's Burial Ground is said to be the burial place of early Scottish kings, including Macbeth, and from around 1200 onwards was used as a cemetery for the MacDonald Lords of the Isles, and members of the clans MacKinnon, MacLean and MacLeod.
