The Shetland Starling (ssp zetlandicus) differs from the Common Starling (ssp vulgaris) that is widespread in Europe by being slightly larger, having a slightly larger and more broadly-based bill, sturdy, thick legs and longer wings. The juveniles are usually very dark, with a sooty ground colour, which makes the black chin spots and white belly streaks more noticeable.
