The sun is said to set over the top of Long Meg in mid-winter when seen from the centre of the stone circle formed by her Daughters. The circle consists of 59 rhyolite glacial erratic stones (27 remaining upright) arranged in an slightly flattened oval shape measuring 109 by 95 metres. There are thought to have been as many as 70 stones originally. Long Meg herself is a 3.8 m high monolith of red sandstone set some 24 metres to the southwest, outside the circle formed by her Daughters.
