Cultivation began in 1965, with the planting of 1500 plants of sitka spruce. Various other species were planted up to 1969 – birch, dark-leaved willow, scots pine, mountain pine and swiss mountain pine. After 1969 there was a lull in the planting, until the Land reclamation forest project in 1990. The forest at Sólbrekkur is supervised by the Suðurnes Forestry Association.
