Striated Caracaras (known as Johnny Rooks in the Falklands) have long been persecuted because they kill young lambs, and are classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. They are now protected by law and on some islands have become very approachable. The right hand bird has a yellow leg band (A2) indicating that it originated on nearby Saunders Island. One of the other two birds has a white leg band (S4) indicating that it hatched on Carcass Island. Leg banding is part of ongoing research in the Falkland Islands into the natural history of the species.
