Male Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) showing the very thick third eyelid across his eye, Cumbria, England
The third eyelid in a Great Spotted Woodpecker seems exceptionally thick and robust compared with that of other species. It is logical to assume that this extra protection is needed when the GSWP pecks food or wood violently.
