North-East Point of Sea Lion Island, Falkland Islands, from the air, showing large areas of Tussac (Poa flabellata)
Tussac (Tussac Grass) forms a crucial habitat for wildlife in the Falkland Islands. It provides shelter for large mammals such as Southern Elephant Seals and Southern Sea Lions, breeding habitat for invertebrates, and of the 65 bird species breeding in the Falkland Islands, 46 nest or feed in Tussac. In addition to its conservation value, its importance as fodder for livestock has led to it being replanted in many areas from which it had been eliminated by the over-grazing of livestock.
