Female Lesser (Darwin's) Rheas (Pterocnemia pennata) & sheep, Patagonia, Chile
This is the southern subspecies - the Avestruz de Magallanes or Darwin's Rhea (Pterocnemia pennata pennata). It is also known as Ñandú in Chile. The male entices several females to lay eggs in a ground scrape nest that he has constructed, then he incubates the eggs and looks after the young for several months on his own.
